Mario Elias dishes on the haunted romance of novel Beloved Disciples & the many life lessons learned at a gay bar - Queerty
"For years, the Chicago-based multidisciplinary artist kept busy with what he dubbed the #KindaSuperArtHistory project (a reference to his social handle, @kindasupermario), a creative endeavor aimed at illuminating the little known stories of queer & femme talents from the past several centuries of art history, which found its waya cross the internet and, in turn, challenged us to look at their masterpieces-and the world around us-through a whole new lens."
"In 2020, Elías compiled those pieces with a series of essays into the book Queering The Male Gaze, which sold out in two printings and found its way all over the world. Now, after a self-imposed social break-for both some healing and writing-he's ready to share his first-ever novel, Beloved Disciples."
"A dazzling gay love story inspired by his own experiences with loss & disassociation, it's set in a coastal Caribbean town where a young man named Simón suddenly loses Albi, the love of his life, finding all the places he once called home are now haunted by his memory. It's when he's struck with grief that his estranged mother reaches out, leaving Simón stuck between existing with a ghost or trying to rebuild a life without Albi."
"Elías gift for realizing worlds in his arts translates seamlessly to the written form, his words enchanting and evocative. But he still made sure to imbue the novel with his distinctive visual flair, incorporating a series of stunning black-and-white drawings inspired by intaglio printing to help set the scene of his literary world."
A Chicago-based multidisciplinary artist created the #KindaSuperArtHistory project to spotlight lesser-known queer and femme talents across several centuries of art history. The project spread online and reframed how masterpieces and their surrounding worlds are viewed. In 2020, the artist compiled the work into the book Queering The Male Gaze, which sold out in two printings and reached readers worldwide. After a social break for healing and writing, the artist released a first novel, Beloved Disciples. The novel is a gay love story inspired by personal experiences with loss and dissociation. Set in a coastal Caribbean town, it follows Simón after Albi’s sudden death, as places become haunted by memory and Simón must choose between living with a ghost or rebuilding a life without Albi. The book includes black-and-white drawings inspired by intaglio printing.
