LOVE IN A COLD CLIMATE
"IT CERTAINLY ISN'T BOOM TIMES, but by and large, the tone in December has been cautiously optimistic. While there's plenty afoot to disturb our serenity, the New York art world has been desiring amity, and folks obliged. With the election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor, the city is (hopefully) on the cusp of great change, politically, economically, and technologically. In light of this, the season's parties felt less like displays of excess than a releasing of collective pressure valves."
"On one of the first crisp evenings of December, I headed to Surrender Dorothy, a new concept shop- cum-theater on West Seventeenth Street, for the New York launch of Bunny Rogers's latest book of poetry, Sadly Glass. "I'm a little nervous," Rogers told me before she went on to read, adjusting her platinum-blonde wig. Aside from a few secret musical performances over the past six months, she's lain relatively low, making her art in private."
December in New York's art world revealed cautious optimism despite economic and social anxieties. The election of Zohran Mamdani as mayor created expectations of political, economic, and technological change. Seasonal events shifted from ostentation toward intimate performances, star-studded buyouts, and apartment gatherings filled with artists and writers. A new concept shop-theater hosted Bunny Rogers's launch for Sadly Glass, where a performance included a Claudia Schiffer-inspired appearance and readings of recent poems. Plans for early 2026 include readings in Berlin, New York's Artists Space, and Los Angeles as part of Udo Kittelmann's multi-floor video exhibition, signaling a cultural recalibration toward 2026.
