Dylan Dreyer's Rejected Children's Book Idea Finds its Moment Now: 'Wicked Smaaht'
"Earlier this month, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck hit "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" and, in a hilariously nostalgic nod to their Bay State roots, named all 351 cities and towns with heavy Boston accents. The moment reminded Dylan of her long-buried project. As she explained on Instagram, "I imagined a book for schools, with little fun facts about all the towns." Publishers called it "too regional," she recalled, but she shared it anyway on Jan. 19."
""Now, here it is for you to enjoy. Or, not enjoy like publishers told me, but dang it, I've always been proud of myself for this!" Dylan wrote. "If you've got nothing better to do: I present to you 'Silly States - Massachusetts,' by Dylan Dreyer." The comments quickly made one thing clear. There may, in fact, be a market for "Silly States" after all."
Dylan Dreyer spent five years in Boston working for an NBC affiliate before joining TODAY in 2012. She created a rapid-fire, sing-song rhyming book that lists every Massachusetts town and imagined it as a school book with fun facts. Publishers deemed the idea too regional, but she posted it on Instagram on Jan. 19 after a viral Tonight Show moment. Followers and several Massachusetts teachers responded positively and encouraged publishing. Dreyer is the author of five children's books, including the Misty the Cloud series, and shared a memorable Fenway first-pitch moment with her son Cal in May 2025.
