"Founder Rich Perin started the publication in 2018 and wasted no time in building his dream team. Staff consists of Ellen Robinette, art director and designer; Kris Corey, designer and operations manager; Edy Guy, publicist and editor; and Emmi Greer, editor. Huddled around the wooden dining table in the center of their office, which is reserved both for formal interviews and family dinners, the core four and I spent a good hour shooting the breeze,"
"By all appearances, they're a hardworking team, scrappy, talented, and clearly driven to build something great. Twice a year, Buckman Journal produces a printed anthology of Northwest fiction, essays, poetry, and visual art. It also operates as an independent press, turning out a variety of book-length projects, ranging from mixed-media collections, photography books, broadsheets, zines, and even an interpretive guide to local flora."
""We print stuff that we enjoy," Perin explained. "We all have different obsessions, curiosities, tastes, and that keeps things really interesting," publicist Guy added. In the near future, the team plans to expand their empire by transforming the space below the editorial offices into a coffee shop/bookstore. We discussed the evolving landscape of Portland's literary community, Perin's grudge against the publishing industry, breaking down barriers for new writers and artists, inclusivity, diversity, and a whole lot more."
The Buckman Journal office sits above a commercial space in the Sullivan's Gulch neighborhood of Portland and features a fully stocked kitchen, cozy reading corner, and abundant plants. Founder Rich Perin launched the publication in 2018 and assembled a small team including art director Ellen Robinette, designer Kris Corey, publicist Edy Guy, and editor Emmi Greer. The operation produces a printed biannual anthology of Northwest fiction, essays, poetry, and visual art and functions as an independent press for book-length and mixed-media projects. The team emphasizes diverse tastes, community access, inclusivity, and plans to add a coffee shop/bookstore below the offices to expand community engagement.
