"A lot of my life has been informed by what's called the moʻolelo. Moʻolelo is sort of like Hawaiian stories, myths, and fables: these stories that I grew up with and were really influential for me. We treat these stories as real and don't regard them as fictional or made up."
The National Book Foundation has announced its list of five authors under 35 whose debut works are expected to significantly impact literature. This year's selections include two short-story collections and three novels, all authored by women. The themes explored range from the New York art scene in the '90s to the effects of social media and Hawaiian folklore. Notably, one featured book, Stephanie Wambugu's Lonely Crowds, was also recognized as a top-ten book by New York Magazine for 2025.
