Prolific board games shoplifter avoids jail

Paul Mangal, a 58-year-old man from Haringey, was spared jail after pleading guilty to stealing £3,000 worth of popular board games from a Waterstone's store in Crouch End. Mangal's theft spree began in April 2023 and continued until his arrest in February. After a thorough investigation involving CCTV footage and cooperation between the police and bookstore staff, Mangal's patterns of theft were tracked, leading to his identification and subsequent conviction. He was handed a suspended sentence with certain restrictions, including a ban on possessing a suitcase in specific areas.
Mangal was given a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court. He was also banned from being in possession of a suitcase.
Sgt James Elliot said: 'Through building strong relationships with staff at this branch of Waterstones, we were able to identify Mangal by assessing his patterns of offending.'
