El-Fasher is facing a humanitarian crisis as a result of a siege imposed by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This siege has exacerbated the ongoing civil war in Sudan, leading to a famine declared in the region. Around 740,000 people are suffering from hunger, with the surging price of food making it unaffordable. Aid agencies report denied access to el-Fasher, and local resources, including communal kitchens, have shut down. International observers warn of the spreading famine potentially affecting broader areas.
In April 2024, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) imposed a siege on el-Fasher, angered when local armed groups declared allegiance to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).
The price of food is surging in el-Fasher, leaving most people unable to afford staples such as sorghum and wheat, costing about four times more than the rest of Sudan.
Communal kitchens, which played a pivotal role in feeding civilians across the country, have shut down due to food shortages brought on by the siege.
A famine has been declared in the Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps, with warnings that it could spread to el-Fasher by May 2024.
