Peru suspends gold mining in north after massacre DW 05/06/2025
Briefly

Peru's President Dina Boluarte announced a temporary 30-day suspension of mining in Pataz after the tragic discovery of 13 security guards killed by kidnappers linked to illegal operations. The government is taking significant measures including implementing a night curfew and establishing a military base to restore order in the area. The affected workers were associated with the subcontractor for the gold mining company Poderosa, which has faced ongoing violence. The Minister of Mining mentioned the suspension could potentially be extended as the situation develops.
The armed forces will take control of the area where Poderosa operates. We all know that illegal activity in our mining sector generates millions and millions, much more than drug trafficking.
In Pataz recently, 39 workers—including contractors and artisanal miners—have been killed in connection with criminal gangs alleged to be involved in illegal mining.
