A grassroots campaign called the People's Union is urging a one-day economic boycott against major retailers to protest corruption in government and corporate practices. Supported by celebrities like John Leguizamo and Bette Midler, participants are encouraged to spend only on essentials at local businesses. The initiative, founded by activist John Schwarz, aims to demonstrate consumer power against corporations that exploit workers and influence politics. This boycott is a precursor to more actions against specific companies, reflecting growing discontent with socioeconomic disparities and corporate governance.
"Mega corporations have driven up prices, underpaid their workers, and outsourced jobs while raking in record profits," the site reads.
"For one day we show them who really holds the power," the group, the People's Union, stated.
"To those who stand in solidarity, tomorrow we make history," Schwarz said in an Instagram video posted Thursday.
The campaign has gained traction among several celebrities including John Leguizamo, Bette Midler, and Stephen King.
