A Belgian festival cancelled the Munich Philharmonic's scheduled September 18 performance because of a lack of clarity about incoming conductor Lahav Shani's views on Israel. Organisers noted Shani had previously spoken in favour of peace and reconciliation but cited his role as chief conductor of the Israel Philharmonic and described his attitude toward the Tel Aviv regime as unclear. The festival said the inhumanity of the current situation and resulting emotional reactions made it undesirable to proceed and that it would not collaborate with partners who had not unequivocally distanced themselves from that regime. The orchestra and officials condemned the decision.
