Uruguay's Silva enters history books after dramatic Giro d'Italia second stage
"But with half a kilometer left, the peloton caught up with the leading group, leading to a frantic sprint in which the 24-year-old Silva prevailed in a photo-finish. The Spaniard Florian Stork finished second and Giulio Ciccone of Italy was third, as the XDS Astana rider Thomas Silva took the pink jersey from the stage one winner, France's Paul Magnier."
Guillermo Thomas Silva won stage two of the Giro d'Italia, becoming the first Uruguayan to win a Grand Tour stage. The 221 km ride from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria was hilly and rain-soaked, and a crash involving nearly 20 riders forced a temporary neutralisation around the 198 km mark. Several riders were injured, and Jay Vine and Adne Holter abandoned. Matteo Moschetti also abandoned after an earlier crash. Early attacks by Mirco Maestri and Diego Pablo Sevilla built a five-minute lead, but the peloton reduced it in rainy conditions and caught them with 27 km remaining. Another mass crash followed, and the race resumed with 18.2 km left. Jonas Vingegaard attacked on the Lyaskovets monastery pass, but the peloton caught the leaders near the finish, leading to a sprint that Silva won. Florian Stork finished second and Giulio Ciccone third, while Silva took the pink jersey from Paul Magnier.
