The Tour de France has introduced an extended 3km rule to improve rider safety during sprint finishes. This rule allows riders who experience crashes within the final 5km of certain stages to receive the same time as the group they were with. In total, seven stages will feature this extended rule, including important sprint days, to reduce chaos and prevent bad luck from significantly impacting race outcomes. The measure accounts for increased traffic calming devices near finish lines, aiming to protect the peloton during these high-risk sections of the race.
