Pidcock eventually chose to wait for Pogačar, indicating the competitive spirit among the riders, especially as they neared the final stretch of the race.
Pogačar went down hard on his left hip before sliding across the asphalt and into the grassy verge, emerging with road rash and a torn skinsuit.
Despite the crash, Pogačar got up and began to chase, needing a bike change but showing resilience by closing the gap on Swift.
