Red Bull Rampage: Day One - Building Freeride's Biggest Stage in the Utah Desert
"For all intents and purposes we are in the middle of nowhere, about 5 and a half miles outside of the small town of La Verkin. But by the hustle and bustle of people spread across the two hillsides and the crazy amounts of infrastructure that's being put in place to make this all possible you'd never really feel like you're too out there."
"With a couple days of heavy rain and otherwise inclement weather the crews are busy digging; and after losing 5+ hours with rain delays and being forced to come off the mountain, teams are hustling to get builds dialed and get their riders on course. Yesterday afternoon we saw the daily deluge sweep through the otherwise sunny landscape, which is of course a gift and a curse."
Red Bull Rampage occurs in southwest Utah and blends extreme mountain biking, large-scale dirt construction, and production-style staging in a remote desert location. Day one of practice featured riders testing lines, teams completing monumental builds, and a small village forming near Virgin, UT. The site sits about five and a half miles outside La Verkin yet feels active due to extensive infrastructure and people across two hillsides. Recent heavy rain helped pack landings quickly but caused rain delays, lightning holds, ruts, and greasy mud that turns the desert dirt into a slick, sticky top layer.
