This summer, bicyclists on the Rockaway boardwalk will face new restrictions requiring them to detour to an adjacent bike lane for a 35-block section. From Memorial Day weekend until October 1, cyclists can only access the boardwalk between 6 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. This policy aims to enhance safety for all boardwalk users, as outlined by park officials who have implemented similar measures at other busy beaches. The decision was influenced by safety concerns over cycling collisions.
To make sure the boardwalk is safe and accessible for all users, this summer we're establishing pedestrian-only hours on the busiest stretches of the boardwalk, during the busiest parts of the day.
We've seen too many people hurt because of speeding cyclists, and we want to avoid that this year.
