Motorcross lovers in Wexford celebrate official opening of new 1.3km track - 'It's absolutely brilliant for the area'
A new 1.3km motocross track named Motoland opened in Gurteen, Coolgreany just outside Gorey. The track is owned and run by Rathdrum Offroad Club. Planning permission for the site in Gorey was granted in November 2025, and work began that month during the off-season for MXGP. A friend built the track in three and a half days, and club members continued working afterward to prepare for riding. The opening practice session took place on Saturday, May 9, with the track officially opened by Tom Scrapper Kavanagh. The facility is intended to boost motocross interest in Wexford and provide a safe, well-supported space for younger riders, with marshals, medics, and insurance in place.
"The new 1.3km track, which has been called Motoland is located in Gurteen, Coolgreany, just outside Gorey and is owned and ran by Rathdrum Offroad Club. Mervyn Griffin of Rathdrum Offroad Club was delighted with the support of the special opening which took place on Saturday, May 9. "It was a great day, a little bit windy," he said. The track was officially opened by Tom Scrapper Kavanagh."
"Work began on the motorcross in November 2025 after the motocross club was granted planning permission for the site in Gorey. "It came at a good time with the planning permission granted in November, which is the off-season for MXGP, the Grand Prix circuit." He further said a friend of his came to build the track for the club during the off season. "It took him three and a half day, we built that in November. I've just been working a little bit here and there ever since, trying to get ready to ride," he added."
"Although a Wicklow-based club, Mervyn said Wexford welcomed the club with open arms to develop the motorcross track. "That's why it's now called Motoland, but its run by Rathdrum Offroad Club." With the new track in Gorey, Mervyn hopes Motoland will continue to boost interest in the motorcross community in Wexford, by providing a new space for younger people. "There is a massive amount of people coming from Wexford, actually from Gorey alone, probably back from when Ferns, when they had the motorcross track, it's in the blood, it's hard to stop doing it."
""It's absolutely brilliant for the area, somewhere that's a proper facility like this that is safety conscious and has marshals, there's medics here, there's insurance, everything is in place," Mervyn added. Mervyn thanked the Order of Matla and Ambulance corps for attending the special opening to ensure the safety of all riders."
