Maxim Van Gils, a promising cyclist for Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, has encountered a tough season due to sickness and injuries after a stellar previous year. Following successful performances in 2024, including top finishes in major races, Van Gils faced a range of difficulties from winter illness to a spring crash that hampered his preparation. In an interview, he noted that while he physically felt better this year, luck has not been on his side, preventing him from showcasing his potential after recently joining a new team.
The strange thing is that I always felt bad during training last year, but in the race, everything really fell into place. This year, I did things much more correctly; still, everything went wrong.
Of course, this is not what you want. I had just joined a new team. You want to show the best version of yourself. That was not exactly the case.
Reflecting on this season compared to last year, Van Gils stated that his condition has actually been better, but he hasn't had the good fortune he found in 2024.
