Kasper Asgreen won stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia following a crash that split the peloton. The Dane, initially part of a breakaway trio, capitalized on the chaos by launching a daring solo attack. He finished 16 seconds ahead of the chasing group, composed mainly of riders led by Isaac del Toro, who increased his general classification lead to 1 minute 20 seconds. The day was marked by a tough wet and narrow route that disrupted race strategies and saw multiple riders crash, emphasizing the unpredictable nature of such high-level cycling events.
Asgreen said, "It's annoying when you have to destroy yourself completely like this to win bike races but when it works out it's all worth it."
Del Toro managed to avoid trouble and was with the chasing group which followed Asgreen over the line to increase his lead at the head of the general classification.
The peloton expected to reel them in before the finish, but a stretch of wet, narrow cobbled streets threw those plans out of the window with less than 25km to race.
Asgreen took off and coming into the final kilometre held a 16sec lead, enough to see the Dane home and able to celebrate long before the line.
