Romain Bardet, despite lengthy absence from racing due to a shoulder injury, performed impressively during the first stage of the Tour of the Alps, finishing fourth. He attributed his performance to the support of teammate Max Poole, who is also recovering from injury. Bardet recognized he needed to improve his form but remained optimistic about future stages. Currently sitting fourth in the general classification, he aims to regain his racing punch as the week progresses, indicating a promising comeback in competitive cycling.
"For the first day back, it's quite okay," the understated Bardet told Cyclingnews at the finish, reflecting on his return to competitive racing after injury.
"It's pretty good, but it's true that I was missing a bit of punch," Bardet admitted. This highlights his recognition of needing to improve as he returns.
"...I hope I can step up during the week," Bardet expressed hopes of improving as the Tour of the Alps progresses, acknowledging the challenge of returning.
"The tough opening stage in Italy was no easy way to return to racing, but it definitely offers promising signs for the week to come," he remarked.
