Mattias Skjelmose, following his victory at the Amstel Gold Race, faced a setback in the Ardennes Classics when he crashed during La Flèche Wallonne, forcing him to abandon the race. Initially fearing a serious injury, he later confirmed no fractures. He candidly acknowledged his miscalculation leading to the crash and expressed optimism for the upcoming Liège-Bastogne-Liège race, participating in a reconnaissance ride shortly after the incident. Despite enduring pain, he remains committed to competing once more.
"I was in a lot of pain right after the crash and was momentarily afraid that my elbow was broken. Fortunately, it now looks like the pain was mostly a combination of being cold and taking a hard hit in the crash."
"Unfortunately, another crash that ruined my chances on a day with good legs! But this time I can't blame it on bad luck, it was 100% my own fault that I crashed," explained the Dane on Wednesday evening.
