Mikel Landa from Soudal-QuickStep became the first rider to abandon the 2025 Giro d'Italia after a severe crash in the last stretch of the opening stage. The crash, which took place during a fast descent with only 5.3 kilometers remaining, resulted in Landa falling off a metre-high ledge. Fellow rider Jay Vine and others were able to recover quickly, but Landa remained on the ground in distress and later was transported via stretcher to an ambulance. His hopes for a top-10 finish in the Grand Tour are now over on just day one.
