'Fast is not always the most sexy' - Time trial helmets help Picnic-PostNL and Van Uden net victory in Giro d'Italia sprint
Briefly

In 2025, the use of aerodynamic time trial helmets has made waves in road cycling, particularly exemplified by Picnic PostNL's Casper van Uden's win during stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia. Initially sporting traditional helmets, the team opted for Lazer's Volante KinetiCore helmets for the final race stretch, focusing on speed for optimal performance. Van Uden dismissed aesthetic concerns, asserting the helmets were simply faster. This trend echoes a wider movement in cycling prioritizing marginal gains, as seen with rival teams adopting similar strategies earlier in the season.
With regards to helmets, I reckon they're just faster, so when it's faster, sometimes you just have to do it. Maybe it doesn't look the best, but I don't care about looks... Fast is maybe not always the most sexy or the nicest to look at, but if it makes me fast, then I'm wearing it.
Coincidentally, Van Uden won the sprint ahead of Olav Kooij, whose Visma-Lease a Bike team were one of the squads that drew attention as they started using old Giro TT helmets more in road races earlier this season.
