ENVE Built the New XC28 Wheels for Cross-Country, but They're Also E-Bike Approved
"Nobl created quite a stir by updating its Signature Series and adding the Ethos, the 'lightest 30mm XC wheelset in the world.' Reserve was perhaps the most recent to do so, announcing the 30XC earlier this week. The new wheels are a bit wider than their 28XC, a trend we are seeing many companies follow to meet the demands of modern XC tracks."
"ENVE has found other ways to beef up their XC28 wheels, enough so that they can even handle the torque of an eMTB. The wheels feature a 28mm inner width and a shallower 21mm rim depth for the compliance they desired. Adding to the overall width and strength of the rim is a 3.8mm sidewall thickness."
"This is ENVE's patent-pending Wide Hookless Bead, with claims of reducing pinch flats by over 50%. Essentially, the leading edge of the bead is wider, helping dissipate impact energy much better than a traditional bead design."
"Rather than drilling the spoke holes, which cuts through and compromises the carbon, the spoke and valve stem holes are molded. This maintains continuous fibers in the carbon, adding strength while cutting weight."
Nobl has updated its Signature Series and introduced the Ethos, the lightest 30mm XC wheelset. Reserve launched the 30XC, wider than the 28XC, to meet modern XC demands. ENVE, however, maintains a 28mm inner width for its XC28 wheels, enhancing strength and performance. The XC28 features a 3.8mm sidewall thickness and a patent-pending Wide Hookless Bead design to reduce pinch flats. ENVE uses molded spoke holes for added strength and laces the rims to a robust Innerdrive hub, resulting in a lightweight 1,516g wheelset suitable for XC riding.
