Donal Fallon: The bike ride that links a chain of events from Buenos Aires to the roof of the GPO in 1916
Briefly

William Bulfin's 'Rambles in Éirinn', published in 1907, is a significant work representing early travel literature in Ireland. It chronicles his extensive journey across the country on his bicycle, the 'Wexford Wheel', covering approximately 3,000 miles from 1902 to 1904. The recent reissue of this book brings renewed attention to Bulfin’s adventures and insights, placing him alongside more contemporary Irish travel writers like Dervla Murphy and Manchán Magan, and revealing the rich tradition of exploration within Irish literature.
One of my prized possessions is a first edition of the classic Irish travel book, Rambles in Éirinn, which was published in 1907.
Before Dervla Murphy or Manchán Magan, there was William Bulfin, who embarked on a great journey across Ireland on a bicycle he called his 'Wexford Wheel'.
