Cycling Crash Sidelines Keegan Swenson: Fractured Pelvis Ends Cape Epic 2026 Bid
"Well, this isn't the Cape Epic announcement post I hoped to make today. After getting hit by a car door during a training ride with his wife, Sofia Gomez Villafane, he headed to Spain for Santa Vall and raced anyway. With a fractured pelvis. While struggling to walk."
"I was optimistic things were okay after that collision with the car door, but after racing Santa Vall with quite a bit of pain (and still struggling to walk), I had a feeling something might actually be wrong, so we decided to get it checked out."
"Gutted to miss the opportunity to race Cape Epic in the rainbow jersey with Matt, but S#!t happens. He's now headed back to Tucson for more scans to figure out what comes next."
Keegan Swenson, the reigning XCM World Champion, was struck by a car door during a training ride with his wife Sofia Gomez Villafane. Despite suspecting injury, he traveled to Spain and competed in the Santa Vall UCI Gravel Earth Series event while experiencing significant pain and difficulty walking. MRI results later confirmed a fractured iliac crest, the load-bearing ridge at the top of the hip bone, along with additional complications. The injury forced Swenson to withdraw from Cape Epic in South Africa, where he was scheduled to race alongside Matt Beers in the rainbow jersey. Swenson is returning to Tucson for additional scans to determine his recovery timeline and next steps.
