Cougar Encounters Have Led To Temporary Closure of Sections of Whistler Bike Park
Briefly

Whistler has temporarily closed the Creekside and Garbanzo Zones of its Mountain Bike Park due to heightened cougar activity. Following two incidents involving aggressive encounters with mountain bikers on June 20, conservation officers decided to close these areas for safety. The closures apply to popular bike trails and hiking routes until further assessment. While the cougars are not candidates for relocation, the local resort prioritizes public safety and will act further if necessary to manage the situation.
In one incident, a mountain biker was approached by a cougar. The cougar disengaged when other bikers arrived but stayed in the area.
We are working with the Conservation Officer Service to address cougar activity in the area of the Ascent Trail on Blackcomb Mountain.
