Enric Mas is out of the Vuelta a España and the season due to thrombophlebitis. Nairo Quintana is ruled out for recovery after a crash, while limited sprint finishes exclude Fernando Gaviria. Quintana, a former winner of the Vuelta, crashed heavily at Vuelta a Burgos, diminishing his comeback prospects. Gaviria forgoes participation in his first season without a Grand Tour since 2016, facing contract uncertainties. Movistar's team selections are pending, with only two positions remaining before the Vuelta's commencement in Turin on Saturday.
Nairo was one of the doubts, but we've ruled him out for the Vuelta. After his crash at the Vuelta a Burgos, the rider needs time to recover.
In this Vuelta a España, there are practically no more than three or four clear sprint finishes. I don't think there will be many sprinters; it's a Vuelta with a lot of mountains.
This will be the first season since 2016 that Gaviria doesn't race a Grand Tour, having burst onto the scene in three-week races with seven stage wins in his first three appearances.
