Berkeley Cycle Works and Wrench Science, two longstanding West Berkeley bike shops, have closed amid industry challenges post-pandemic. Initially, bike sales surged by 64% in 2020, driven by new consumer interests. However, supply chain issues led shops to struggle with stock, and as demand waned, many manufacturers reduced prices drastically, affecting profit margins. Additionally, Jitensha Studio is also facing struggles as it relocates, hoping to continue operations despite high moving costs and rent. A GoFundMe campaign aims to support Jitensha in its transition.
"We spent most of our time telling people, Sorry, we can't help you,' Michael Britton, the founder of Berkeley Cycle Works, said."},{
