"Set to a spare soundscape that allowed breath and footfall to register as part of the score, A Couple showcased Assaf's movement language - rooted in grounded elasticity and swift directional shifts associated with Batsheva's Gaga-informed aesthetic. What emerged was less a portrait of romance than of interdependence, two bodies testing weight, trust, and autonomy in real time without the requirement of resolution."
"In the work, dancers Graham Feeny and Zack Sommer performed effortlessly, their duet taking on a magnetic quality that traversed the stage with ease. They lifted each other and separated, only to return with intensity in their gazes."
Gibney Dance, a New York-based company, performed at the Newmark Theatre for four shows in late February after a 20-year absence from Portland. The program opened with A Couple, choreographed by Roy Assaf and featuring dancers Graham Feeny and Zack Sommer. The piece explored interdependence and trust between two bodies through grounded, elastic movement rooted in Batsheva's Gaga-informed aesthetic. A sparse soundscape allowed breath and footfall to become part of the musical score. The evening continued with Trio (of six) by William Forsythe, staged for Gibney by Thomas McManus. The performances were attended by company founder Gina Gibney and White Bird Executive Director Graham Cole, reinforcing Portland's significance as a dance hub.
