"Dance offers me such a rich palette to express and explore the frailties and contradictions of human emotions using movement as language. What is said when a body shifts, an arm quivers, a shoulder twitches, a leg extends, or a sideways glance happens in a flash?"
"Show Don't Tell begins and ends with a family posed for a photograph: a father, a mother, two girls, and a boy arranged in what looks like a carefully composed portrait of domestic happiness. As the dance unfolds, however, the image - and the family - slowly degrade, revealing a darker reality beneath the surface."
NW Dance Project's Spring Songs featured two contrasting works: Show Don't Tell by Sarah Slipper and Saudade by Ethan Colangelo. Show Don't Tell begins with a seemingly happy family portrait that gradually reveals darker realities. The performance is set to Poulenc's Concerto for Two Pianos and showcases the dancers in high-contrast costumes, symbolizing the duality of appearance and reality. The pairing of the two works enhances their individual beauty, demonstrating how contrasting elements can create a more profound artistic experience.
