Grand entrance: Rogue Valley Symphony brings home The Raven Oregon ArtsWatch
Briefly

Rogue Valley Symphony has recently acquired its first concert grand piano, a nine-foot Hamburg Steinway D known as The Raven. This exceptional piano has a history linked to the late architect Rafael Vinoly, residing in his Manhattan office for two decades. The acquisition followed an unexpected bequest from a Grants Pass symphony patron, coinciding with RVS's ongoing quest for a new instrument. Music director Martin Majkut emphasized the critical need for a quality piano as previous instruments were rentals, enhancing the musical experience for both performers and audiences. The piano will debut at the Craterian Theater this August.
Martin Majkut, the RVS music director, explains, 'The pianos we used were rentals. The board agreed to earmark the bequest for a new instrument and tasked me to find a suitable one.'
Majkut describes the quality of Southern Oregon University's piano as fine but notes, 'the rental piano used at the Craterian and Grants Pass performances was on its last legs.' He highlights concerns expressed by guest artists about the instrument’s condition.
After inspecting The Raven, which had been in a Manhattan architect's office, Majkut expressed excitement: 'This stunning nine-foot Hamburg Steinway D is finally coming to roost in its new home this summer.'
As the RVS prepared for its official coming-out party, Majkut revealed their anticipation: 'It's a week-long, three-concert debut at Medford's Craterian Theater in August, marking a new era for us.'
