Swiss officials halt further evacuations after glacier collapse
Briefly

The Birch glacier in Valais, Switzerland, collapsed on Wednesday, unleashing debris across two kilometers and blocking the river Lonza, creating an artificial lake. The village of Blatten was largely destroyed, with 16 residents evacuated as authorities monitor the situation. Geologist Raphael Mayoraz emphasized vigilance, stating, "we are not certain that the danger is averted." One resident remains missing, while an artificial dam downstream has been emptied to manage potential flooding. The area is under close watch as concerns over water rush persist.
"We absolutely cannot let our guard down," Raphael Mayoraz, a geologist working with the Valais canton, told public television.
Authorities are studying evacuation plans and have warned residents who could be affected.
