Germany news: Author Arundhati Roy quits Berlinale over Gaza
""With deep regret, I must say that I will not be attending the Berlinale,""
""[to] hear them say that art should not be political is jaw-dropping.""
""It is a way of shutting down a conversation about a crime against humanity even as it unfolds before us in real time when artists, writers and filmmakers should be doing everything in their power to stop it.""
Arundhati Roy canceled planned attendance at the Berlin International Film Festival in response to what she described as unconscionable statements by the festival jury and jury president Wim Wenders about the Gaza Strip. At the festival press conference, a journalist accused the festival of showing solidarity with Ukrainians and Iranians but not Palestinians, and a jury member called that question unfair. Wim Wenders said, "We cannot really enter the field of politics," and described filmmakers as "the counterweight to politics." Roy said hearing that art should not be political shuts down conversation about an unfolding crime against humanity. Roy had been scheduled to attend a screening of her 1989 film "In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones." Germany has faced international criticism for diplomatic support to Israel, which says it targets Hamas militants; Hamas is designated a terrorist group by Israel, Germany and several other countries.
