From witness to lifeline: One man's mission to help immigrants detained by ICE at 26 Federal Plaza
"There were definitely times when I loved it. When you put a rocket, a payload in orbit, and watch an entire launch with your co-workers it's an exhilarating feeling. There's nothing like it, it's an incredible time. But you know, life drags on and the work slows down, and it becomes more regimented."
"Peter Melck Kuttel, 30, has had a front row seat to many of the most violent and heartbreaking incidents that have taken place since the ICE takeover of Lower Manhattan's 26 Federal Plaza, from watching on helplessly as an immigrant mother was shoved to the ground to holding the head of an injured photojournalist as medics rushed to his aid."
Peter Melck Kuttel, 30, transitioned from a well-paying defense contractor position in Colorado's space industry to unpaid volunteer work as a detention coordinator for Saint Peter's Church in New York. Despite finding initial fulfillment in aerospace work, he grew dissatisfied with the regimented nature of the job. After relocating to New York, Kuttel accidentally discovered ICE operations at 26 Federal Plaza and became committed to documenting and assisting detained immigrants. For nearly a year without compensation, he has maintained a daily presence at the facility, witnessing violent incidents and providing support to those detained by federal agents.
