Zurich combines finance with a strong art scene. The Kunsthaus Zurich expanded in 2021 with a David Chipperfield-designed extension, becoming the country’s largest art gallery and holding works spanning 800 years, including old masters, Swiss artists like Giacometti, and major names such as Monet, Cezanne, Picasso, Van Gogh, and Warhol. The surrounding area is now the Zurich Gallery Mile, explored during the Zurich Art Weekend in June with exhibitions, tours, talks, performances, art walks, screenings, and parties. Zurich-West includes the Lowenbraukunst-Areal, an arts center formed from a 1890s brewery. Museum Rietberg near Lake Zurich presents non-European art in historic villas and a modern extension, with current exhibitions focused on Indian paintings, Japanese woodblock prints, and Chinese lacquerware. Baden offers a fast train day trip to the renovated Museum Langmatt, featuring an art nouveau villa with about 50 French impressionist masterpieces. Lille provides additional gallery options with fewer crowds and quick Eurostar access from London, including the Palais des Beaux-Arts with a major collection.
