Europe's new weapons system to fight the rising threat of Russian drones
"Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story."
"The American-made Merops system, compact enough for a mid-sized pickup truck, identifies and intercepts drones. It crucially employs artificial intelligence to navigate even when satellite and electronic communications are jammed. NATO military officials told The Associated Press that Denmark will also deploy Merops, alongside Poland and Romania. This forms part of a strategic effort to boost defences on the alliance's eastern flank. The aim, officials stated, is to create a border from Norway to Turkey so well-armed it deters Moscow's forces from any crossing."
Poland and Romania are deploying the American Merops weapons system to defend against Russian drones and Denmark will also deploy Merops. The compact Merops system fits on a mid-sized pickup truck, identifies and intercepts drones, and uses artificial intelligence to navigate when satellite and electronic communications are jammed. NATO officials aim to strengthen defences along the alliance's eastern flank from Norway to Turkey to deter Moscow's forces. The need for such systems rose after about 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, requiring multimillion-dollar jets to respond to inexpensive drones. The Independent operates without paywalls and seeks donations to fund on-the-ground reporting.
