Berlin to crack down a beloved giveaway tradition DW 10/02/2025
"I was very pleased when I came back in 2013 to see that there's some kind of culture,"
"Most people don't just throw the trash out it's a nice thing to do and it's enriching the neighborhood."
""good and desirable,""
""led to excesses that are not in line with the original intention.""
"It must be made clear that leaving items on the street does not release the owner from responsibility for them, along the lines of 'I gave it away' so now I'm rid of it,"
Residents commonly leave repurposable goods on window ledges and in front of houses labeled "zu verschenken" for others to take. Items such as old sofas, broken fridges, baby clothes, books and CDs are frequently offered and often disappear within minutes. Musician Eno Thiemann found discarded Haruki Murakami books and praised the practice for enriching the neighborhood. The city's environment department says the idea is "good and desirable" but that it has "led to excesses that are not in line with the original intention." Cleanup cost about 10.3 million ($12.8 million) last year, and new fines will be introduced, with penalties depending on item and district.
