Berkeley, a Look Back: Business owners push for Seventh Street arterial
Briefly

A century ago, Berkeley manufacturers sought to develop a highway along Seventh Street to streamline industrial traffic, sparking a conflict with local residents. The proposed route would facilitate heavy truck travel, bypassing San Pablo Avenue and instead prioritizing Seventh Street for factories. The East Bay cities aimed to attract new industries, requiring broad arterial highways. However, this plan faced opposition from West Berkeley residents who objected to increased truck traffic in their neighborhoods, marking a significant clash between industrial interests and community concerns during a time of evolving urban dynamics.
The East Bay cities are undoubtedly on the eve of great industrial development. The cities of this region must do their part to make the region enticing to new industries.
Seventh Street traffic runs north from Ashby Avenue to Dwight Way as a main arterial, then through traffic diagonals over to Sixth Street and continues north from there to University Avenue.
