The Czech Republic has a strong beer tradition and is known for very high per-capita beer consumption, with the pub serving as a community meeting place for conversation and games. Beer and lively discussion appear in works by Czech writers such as Jaroslav Hašek, Bohumil Hrabal, and Jaroslav Rudiš. Beer has remained important for centuries, including during communist rule when Czech beer, especially Pilsner, continued to be exported widely.
