Raki, a traditional anise-flavored spirit from Turkey, is integral to social dining experiences, often linked with poetry and hospitality. However, in recent times, it has gained notoriety for causing a spike in alcohol poisoning deaths due to counterfeit bottles. This alarming trend has prompted government actions to seize large quantities of illegal alcohol and make arrests. The soaring prices of authentic raki, driven by taxes, have made it less accessible to the average citizen, further complicating the issue as many turn to cheap, dangerous alternatives.
Raki, much more than a drink, symbolizes Turkish culture and community, blending meals, laughter, and tradition. However, recent years have seen an alarming increase in alcohol poisoning incidents.
The government has seized 648,000 liters of illegally produced raki and arrested 560 suspects amid rising concerns over health risks associated with bootleg alcohol.
