The Brewers Association created the Independent Craft Brewer Seal to help beer lovers identify independent craft beer amid changing ownership and consolidation. The seal shows an upside down beer bottle with the words “Independent Craft.” To qualify, a brewery must be small, producing 6 million barrels of beer or less, independent, with no more than 25% ownership by other alcohol industry entities excluding craft beer producers, and clearly classified as a brewing company. The seal is intended to signal that a brewery is not owned by major U.S. beer companies. Some brewers believe the symbol may matter less to consumers because consolidation has reduced its impact.
"The Brewers Association created the Independent Craft Brewer Seal in an effort to "proudly display that independent spirit." The seal features an upside down beer bottle with the words "Independent Craft" scrawled alongside. According to the Brewers Association's site, its purpose is to give "beer lovers an easy way to identify independent craft beer.""
