Illinois curbs alcohol sales Sat. with Final Four at stake
""While we cheer the Illini basketball team on to victory this weekend, I want to remind fans to follow the team's lead and to celebrate responsibly," Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen said. "These steps are being taken to reduce the possibility of public safety hazards before and after the game.""
"Jeff Hamilton, deputy liquor commissioner in Champaign, noted that students were "climbing on statues" during previous celebrations, prompting local officials to implement these restrictions. He mentioned that similar alcohol restrictions had not been issued in 20 years."
Champaign city officials announced restrictions on alcohol sales on the University of Illinois campus in anticipation of potential celebrations if the basketball team wins. Bars must serve alcohol in paper and plastic cups, and packaged liquor sales will be banned after tipoff. No more than one keg can be sold to an individual, and alcohol deliveries will be prohibited. These measures aim to mitigate public safety risks following previous celebrations that raised concerns among local police.
