George Wendt made his last public appearance in August 2024, nine months before his death, on the podcast 'Where Everybody Knows Your Name' with former 'Cheers' co-stars Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson. Wendt shared the story of how he landed the iconic role of Norm Peterson, initially auditioning for a one-word part. He secured the role and went on to become a fan favorite, earning six Emmy nominations. Wendt, who died in his sleep at 76, was remembered for his contributions to comedy and the beloved sitcom.
Wendt recalled, 'My agent called and said, 'You know, honey, they want you to do this 'Cheers.'' I initially auditioned to just say one word in the pilot episode.
Wendt explained, 'They decided they were going to try to make it work out where I could do both shows, and then the other show got canceled.'
