"Brimming with the spicy, slightly smokey flavour that marks the Hela condiment usually reserved for roadside sausages and chips, the beer is a strictly limited, special edition release. The Currydurst tests the limits of flavored beersImage: Astra Brauerei St Pauli GmbH St. Pauli's cult classic beer Astra is popular beer across Hamburg, but is mostly associated with the St. Pauli district, a working class and alternative culture hub where the city's port and red-light district meet."
"After the nearly closing in the 1990s, the city of Hamburg ultimately intervened and bought Astra, which was then sold to Holsten the other major city brewery. At Holsten, the cult classic was given a makeover. A new advertising campaign was launched under the slogan "Astra. Was dagegen? (Astra. What about it?). The beer was also given a new logothe heart and anchorto symbolize its rebellious yet tolerant St. Pauli heritage."
Astra St Pauli Brewery partnered with Hela to produce Currydurst, a special-edition beer that blends Hela's spiced curry ketchup flavor into a 6.5% Astra beer. The beverage channels the spicy, slightly smoky taste associated with Currywurst and street food, presenting a beverage reinterpretation of a local fast-food staple. The release is strictly limited and positioned as a homage to St. Pauli's street food culture near the Reeperbahn. Astra traces origins to 1647, adopted the Astra name in 1909, and after near-closure in the 1990s underwent municipal intervention, sale to Holsten, and a later brand makeover.
