A new study published in Environmental Science & Technology reveals that a significant portion of U.S. breweries, 18%, reside in areas with detectable levels of PFAS, or 'forever chemicals,' in municipal water. This is concerning as the majority of the 23 beers investigated by researchers contained these harmful substances. While the presence of PFAS raises alarm, researchers, including Jennifer Hoponick Redmon, advise against removing beer entirely from consumption, indicating that knowledge and policy change are crucial moving forward.
"Approximately 18% of U.S. breweries are located within zip codes with detectable PFAS in municipal drinking water."
"If you want to still enjoy happy hour, then I think you should," one of the study's authors, Jennifer Hoponick Redmon, told Perkins.
