Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela is an influential figure in South Africa's beer brewing scene, teaching aspiring brewers about the intricate process of making craft beer. She emphasizes the importance of balancing sugar with grains during brewing. At her microbrewery, she trains 13 young graduates, primarily women, who have science backgrounds and seek additional qualifications in brewing. Students engage in practical lessons covering every aspect of beer production, focusing on both international and African beer varieties. Nxusani-Mawela's initiative addresses the need for more representation in the multibillion-dollar brewing industry, creating opportunities for underrepresented groups.
When you are brewing you must constantly check your mixture. We are looking for a balance between the sugar and the grains.
My favorite part is the mashing. It's where the beer and everything starts.
Apiwe Nxusani-Mawela believes it is essential to open South Africa's beer-brewing industry to more Black people and women.
Students will spend six months exploring beer varieties, both international and African, before another six months on work placement.
