Michael Olise completed an outstanding season with Bayern Munich and is viewed by many as a potential Ballon d’Or contender. He is expected to be a key player to watch at the upcoming FIFA World Cup because France is among the top championship contenders. Gernot Rohr, a former Nigeria coach and former Bayern player, said he tried to convince Olise to join Nigeria in 2019 after watching him in person with an assistant. Rohr stated that Olise did not want to join at the time. Rohr noted that Olise was eligible to represent England, France, Nigeria, Algeria, and Haiti, and that the availability of multiple options reduced Nigeria’s chances. Rohr said Olise already appeared strong years earlier and ultimately refused Nigeria.
"“In 2019, I saw Olise and I had a look at him with my assistant. We went to watch a match and we tried to invite him but he did not want to join us at the time,” declared Rohr."
"“Because I think he already knew he can have a big future in a European team and can play for several countries of course. Six or seven years ago when we saw him, he was already so strong. Unfortunately he refused to play for Nigeria,” lamented Rohr."
"“At the time, Olise was eligible to play for five teams: England (where he was born), France (his mother's nationality), Nigeria (his father's roots), Algeria and Haiti (due to his mother's roots).”"
