New App for France-Spain Motorway Drivers
"This isn't just another navigation tool. Unlike Google Maps or Waze, the SCT's new app will send real-time voice alerts directly to your phone based on your exact location. If there's an accident, road closure, or emergency such as flooding, drivers nearby will hear an immediate warning through the app, helping them change their route or slow down in time."
"Ramon Lamiel, the SCT's director, explained in an interview with El Periódico that the idea came after previous talks with major navigation companies didn't pan out. "We've had a long relationship with Google Maps and also met with Waze to include virtual signs broadcasting official voice messages about motorway closures. Unfortunately, that project didn't go ahead. That's why we're developing our own app, which will serve as an alert system on the AP-7," he said."
The Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) is developing a location-based mobile app to deliver real-time voice alerts on the AP-7 motorway. Downloading the app will not be legally mandatory but will soon be necessary for drivers who want to avoid delays on that route. The app will send immediate, location-targeted voice warnings for accidents, road closures, and emergencies such as flooding so drivers can reroute or slow down in time. The initiative targets the AP-7 linking the French border and Barcelona, where accident rates—especially involving lorries—have risen sharply and caused massive tailbacks. Previous plans with major navigation companies did not proceed, prompting a proprietary SCT system.
