Inside Spain: Why Barcelona's new tourism crackdown doesn't convince locals
""We know residents consider it insufficient, but we're making an initial push for improvement that will undoubtedly benefit residents,""
""deepen the strategies already outlined for tourism management.""
""presenting a drop in visitors to Park Guell as progress in reducing tourism is a fallacy""
""Where will the visitors go instead if they don't go to the park?""
Barcelona City Council approved a gradual reduction of annual visitors to Park Guell from 4.5 million to a maximum of 4 million, phased over the next two years. The proposal was presented by ERC and received support from all city parties except the centre-right PP. The reduction will result in roughly 1,300 fewer daily visits by 2027. Neighbours and residents call the move insufficient and demand a cut to 2 million, labelling the plan a distraction tactic. Barcelona University urban anthropologist Jose Mansilla described framing the drop as progress as a fallacy and questioned where displaced visitors would go. Authorities continue seeking a balance between tourism-driven income and residents' quality of life.
