Catalan law threatens Uber and Cabify licences
"Barcelona is once again at the centre of a transport storm - and this time, it could spell disaster for ride-hailing giants like Uber, Cabify and Bolt. A new law being pushed through the Catalan Parliament threatens to all but push these platforms off the streets of the city, reducing them to a background role while taxis regain almost total control."
"The law adds two major hurdles that will make everyday use of these apps almost impossible: Rides must be booked at least two hours in advance. Each trip must last a minimum of one hour."
Proposed Catalan law would cut VTC licences in Barcelona from about 900 to 300, limiting private-hire services to intercity trips only. The rules require rides to be booked at least two hours in advance and impose a minimum trip duration of one hour, while a longstanding ban reserves street pickups to taxis. Exceptions would apply for major international events such as the Mobile World Congress. The measure would confine platforms mainly to corporate travel, weddings and long airport transfers and is expected to remove thousands of drivers from local work, significantly expanding taxi market control.
